7/10: Award Winning TV show transitions well to the big screen and doesn't disappoint
Sunday, April 9, 2017

I for one found popularity of Australian teenage drama 'Dance Academy' unprecedented. It's easy to say now, due to the show's success has earned itself two local Logie Wins and Two Emmy Nominations overseas. Though due to the show's overall impact and worldwide cult following, I guess it was only a matter of time for the series creators, as well as the cast to eventually have some form of a reunion or continuation. The show itself boasted a vibrant Sydney setting involving colourful characters with depth and dimension and was able to take their youths seriously, especially when covering themes not often thought out well enough in other teen dramas. For Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin) dancing was everything to her, until she had a suffered a spinal fracture in her final company audition. Despite making a full recovery she now passes her time working as a waitress at the Sydney Opera House. Although she fears she'll...

3/10: Disappointing and Unrealistic
Tuesday, September 5, 2017

Well, it's hard to say just how much of a letdown this movie was without spoiling, so SPOILERS AHEAD, proceed with caution. So, first of all... moving the story from Australia to NYC was extremely disappointing. The Australian setting gave the original series something different, moving it to NYC made it just another mediocre dance movie (ironically, something that the lead characters complain about in the TV series repeatedly). Coupled with the jarring move to NYC, was the unrealistic portrayal of Kat getting a job on a kids show. Not only are cheap kids shows NOT made in NYC (they're made in CA), but the recently discovered star of a cable show wouldn't make enough money for a fancy New York apartment and a hot pink limo. Thirdly, you've already killed Sammy off the show. There was no need to bring back Ben's cancer. It was needless drama.Fourth, why put Tara through the ringer...

10/10: Everything it needed to be
Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Finally! After more than a year, I finally get to see this! Let me give you a little bit of context. I'm 33. I'm french-Canadian. I live in Montreal. I'm a graduate student. And I'm the only one I know that cares about this.I think any review made by anyone who hasn't watched the show is missing something important. This is not a movie that stands on its own. It's the culmination of 3 years' worth of time following the incredibly relatable and lovable bunch that were in the original Dance Academy series.I remember stumbling upon the first episode back in 2011. I was immediately hooked. I cannot count the number of times I cried, just because I was seeing the characters strive and overcome.Watching this movie was like seeing my own little sister grow out of her awkward stage and try finding her way into the world. It was...

8/10: You need to see the show first
Monday, July 8, 2019

I am from Spain. I remember seeing Dance Academy back in 2011 and I was a huge fan. I know the movie was released a few years ago, but I didn't have the chance to see it until I found out it was on Netflix. I am so thankful for this movie, it gaves the show closure which is what my childhood needed. I've been scared because for a moment I thought they were doing a 'Sam' again... but luckily they decided not to break my heart for real this time... For me, the only problem with the movie is that characters are so changed. Like back in the series it was easy for me to hate Christian because he was SO toxic with Tara, he manipulated her bigtime. But he doesn't do it in this film and I really wanted them to break up because I think they are no good for each other. Anyway, they...

6/10: Besides, it didn't even win me over
Sunday, June 20, 2021

Overcoming movies usually win my heart, but musicals and dances, with their cake recipes for nothing and low sugar, bore me, like, better get off the diet by eating tasty, boring and boring stuff, (version) Portuguese from Portugal, only the soundtrack makes us love, makes us cry and want to go on screen, the end credits with photos and videos of the child actors, won S2... besides, it didn't even win me over
