Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013)

1/10: This film is so wrong BUT WAIT NOSTALGIA
Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Beware of spoilers are in this review. Why I really despise this film, is its lack of consequence. Every part of Dragon Ball Z was suspenseful because the villains were evil; they intended to kill people, worlds, possibly even the universe. Now, this isn't to say that a villain must be portrayed this way, but it takes away from a universe where the Z fighters can literally do incredibly insane and powerful moves--which is fun to watch. We don't get any of that in this film, just a very tame fight between Bills the lord of destruction and Goku. Now, a lot of people would retort that the concept of Bills/Beerus whatever these gods are called--is a nice change of pace to what we are used to, a slow build up of suspenseful talking and action that lead to either the destruction of earth and or the universe or chaos on earth (in case for...

4/10: Nice effects, but baffling character choices make it ultimately disappointing
Saturday, February 14, 2015

I'm quite honestly surprised by all the positive reviews this is getting. This movie was extremely disappointing to me. Let's cover all of the failings of this movie. Presented in the order I think of them:1. Was Kaio-sama's (Japanese) voice actor stoned during recording? He was not able to convey even the slightest bit of fear or panic.2. What was even the point of Pilaf and co in the movie? They did not affect the plot one tiny bit, and yet we spend an almost unbearably unfunny 10 minutes with them in an 85 minute movie.3. I dunno who killed the real Vegeta before this movie started and replaced him with this singing, dancing, acting-loving-toward-Bulma clown, but he's the true villain of the movie.4. Speaking of villains, Beerus was just lame. Stop me if you've heard this before. A mystical villain who is awoken from a long...

9/10: Honestly, how could you not LOVE this movie
Thursday, August 7, 2014

I went into this movie not expecting much. I was a huge fan of the cartoon growing up, but it'd been so long I had no clue what I was getting myself into at the theater yesterday. I went with my youngest brother who inherited my DBZ VHS tapes so many years ago.I really don't even know where to start with the things I loved in this movie. They showed you pretty much everything in the Z Universe in the span of 1 hr 30 minutes. It honestly felt like I got to catch up with friends I haven't seen in over 10 years, totally bizarre but lovable, quirky friends. This movie floored me.The thing I love most about DBZ is that on the surface its an anime for bros, but underneath its deep, introspective, and full of symbols. The show is brimming with positivity and heart and sets incredible examples for any child growing...

8/10: The Spirit of the original Dragon Ball lives on, A great mix of classic elements
Sunday, March 31, 2013

Well before starting this review i would like to say that there are some technical aspects that i am going to intentionally avoid, you may ask why and the answer to that is simple. The Dragonball Series has been a part of my childhood , it made me love anime's and if it wasn't for this i would have never watched other amazing anime's such Death Note, Code Geass, Naruto, Bleach etc. Simply put Dragonball is the series that made me understand anime in general and judging it from a technical view point is simply not fair, So when i first received the news that a new DragonballZ movie is going to be released and is actually going to be canon , my excitement went through the roof. I did not want to lose the chance of seeing the premier and was willing to go to any logical limits for it and let me tell you it was worth...

3/10: Seriously? This is it
Saturday, September 21, 2013

I'm a fan of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, so like every fan I was excited to see this new movie. What a massive letdown.Okay, so the story is there's this guy called Bills who's the God of Destruction, he hears about Goku defeating Frieza, decides to fight him because he had a dream about a "Super Saiyan God" and heads for Earth.First problem is that the story is ridiculously anorexic, even for DBZ. It showed promise in the first 20 minutes as they were doing a good job establishing Bills' personality and building him up to be a complete bad ass. But it all goes downhill after that. Why he wants to fight the "Super Saiyan God" and why it came to him in a dream is never answered, and we're never given a good reason behind his motivation. The next 20 minutes is nothing but filler, it's just Vegeta at Bulma's...
