6/10: Better Than You Might Expect...
Saturday, March 23, 2013

Better Than You Might Expect. Towards the end, the barely teen-aged Chloe Moretz is sitting in the passenger's seat of a swiftly moving car. Absently, she puts her palm out of the open window and gazes at it as the rushing wind moves her hand up or down, depending on the angle of incidence. The shot only lasts a few seconds and there is no particular point to it. It doesn't move the narrative forward. It's just the kind of thing curious kids do. But somebody had to think of that shot, do the set up, and shoot it. It's an example of the kind of grace note that turns what could easily have been a piece of exploitative junk into an interesting visual experience. My TV guide gave it only two stars out of a possible four. That's a bad sign. Even worse was the precis. Two detectives join to find a serial...

5/10: The Truth is more horrid...

The Truth is more horrid than Screenplay There is an area known as the "killing fields" in Texas, where 30 girls and young women have turned up dead since the 1970s. This stretch of land runs along I-45 between Houston and Galveston, Texas and is the bloodiest stretch of highway in America. Here are the basics on the murders that have haunted the area for decades. Just 50 miles long, over the past 38 years nearly 40 women and young girls have been murdered or vanished along this highway. Their bodies have been dumped in fields, parks and the many bodies of water in the area, usually in a sickening state. As of today, the killer is still on the loose. And detectives admit, they're no closer to catching him--although scientific advances could finally end the macabre dance of death. He first struck June 17, 1971. Colette Wilson, 13, had been dropped off from school band practice...

Brutally slow mystery flick that tries to be a thriller Texas Killing Fields has a lot going for it. Mostly a really terrific cast, and they all do a good job. The problem with this movie is editing, story, and plot. If you watch a trailer for the film it looks like an action packed thriller and it isn't either of those things. The film crawls along at a snail's pace. The story is so slow that you start to lose focus on the main concept. They add in a sub plot that just further buries the main story. Part of the charm of this film should have been the disturbing setting of the killing fields but despite being mentioned and despite bodies showing up there...it is completely underused in the main plot.I still try really hard to like Sam Worthington. He's been in some great films including Terminator Salvation and of course Avatar but...

An Average Crime Thriller With A Competent Cast Texas Killing Fields is a crime film that focuses on several killings along Houston's I-45 corridor between Houston and Galveston, in and around an area known as "the killing fields"; the crime investigators on the case; their sacrifices and personal mission to protect the innocent; plus their stakeout to find the killer of the fictional character or victim in the movie. It was loosely inspired by true events surrounding the murders of women kidnapped from cities spread along 30 plus miles of I-45 corridor and dumped in many areas to include numerous bayous surrounding the oil fields of Texas City. It features Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jessica Chastain and Chloƫ Grace Moretz.A local homicide detective and his partner, a transplanted cop from New York City as they track a sadistic serial killer dumping his female victims' mutilated bodies in a nearby marsh dubbed The Killing Fields. The...

6/10: Inexperienced writer and director shows...
Saturday, December 29, 2012

Inexperienced writer and director shows Texas Killing Fields is a prime example of how a pretty solid, even reasonably enjoyable at times, film can be ruined by just a few small details. This one had a lot of potential but when I checked I wasn't surprised to find that neither the screenwriter, nor the director had much experience under their belts at all. More experienced ones would have polished up these details up and produced a very good film. There were too many little things that bothered me to mention them all, but here's a few:There were no likable characters (not one) in the whole film.As police officers they were highly inadequate, even to the point of being laughable. The reveal of the killers is presented as a twist, but there was really no one else it could have been. If you didn't see it coming you should feel pretty ashamed. This type of movie...
