7/10: A bit long but an...

A bit long but an entertaining big budget Hollywood action thriller. Enemy of the State is set in Washington DC where New York congressman Phillip Hammersley (Jason Robards) is assassinated at an isolated lake by politician Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) because of his opposition to the Telecommunications Security & Privacy Act which Reynolds is trying to get passed as law. Reynolds thinks he has gotten away with it but wildlife photographer Daniel Zavitz (Jason Lee) has a digital camera placed at the lake to monitor & record Canadian Geese, the camera filmed the whole incident in super high quality & Reynolds is clearly visible. Reynolds sends some men to take care of Zavisz but he manages to get away & slip the video footage contained on a disc to labour lawyer Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) before he is run down by a fire engine, unsure of how much Dean knows Reynolds & his men set out to ruin his life & discredit him as well...

Hold on to your hats, boys and girls! The movie falls completely apart at the end, but before the last ten minutes we have a rootin', tootin' action movie full of technological wizards, chases, shootouts, a hero climbing the face of a hotel in his underwear, a couple of murders, voyeurism, the loner hero's pet cat, and two mismatched protagonists against the National Security Agency, with the FBI as the unwitting good guys this time around. It's the kind of movie in which every vehicle seems sooner or later to explode in a fireball. Now, we have to ask right off the bat about verisimilitude here. The NSA (or, pardon me, what appears to be a "rogue group" within the NSA) murders a senator (Jason Robards) who opposes their plan to surveille everyone in search of terrorists -- or whatever. They have satellites at their disposal that can read your credit card number from 150 miles in space. If...

Enemy of the State The first couple of times I saw this film I got confused, but seeing it again I can at last make more sense of the story, and appreciate it as a really good conspiracy thriller, from brother of Sir Ridley, director Tony Scott (Crimson Tide, True Romance). Basically Congressman Phillip Hammerson (Jason Robards) is murdered by politician Thomas Reynolds (Jon Voight) after declining negotiations about a new surveillance systems with satellites. Raynolds doesn't realise it, but the murder was caught on tape by someone, Zavitz (Jason Lee), and on the run he plants the tape on mild-mannered lawyer Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith), unknown to him, and soon after, Zavitz is killed. The NSA (National Security Agency), working with Reynolds, are now delving into Dean's life, and not long after he loses his job and wife, Carla (Ray's Regina King). Soon enough though, he realises he is being hunted, after he finds...

Enemy of the State A labour lawyer, Robert Dean(Will Smith)is embroiled in a controversial NSA cover-up when a former college pal from Georgetown(Jason Lee)leaves a recording of the murder of a Congressman(Jason Robards)at the hands of Thomas Reynolds(Jon Voight)the head of NSA because he opposed a Security act being passed regarding wire-tapping at will anyone they deem a possible threat against America. The disc is what Reynolds needs or it will certainly hit the fan in a major way. Reynolds tools all his resources putting his crackpot team of surveillance wiz-kids and footmen on the hunt for Dean, whose life is thrown into a tailspin thanks to his supposed ties with the mob and a source(Lisa Bonet)who gives him information from a Deepthroat named Brill. Brill, it turns out is Edward Lyle(Gene Hackman), a former NSA man himself removed from the agency he loved after an...

An Action Thriller That Tackles The Individual's Right The action producing-directing team of Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott is back with another thrill-a-minute ride called Enemy of the State. It is a spy-thriller about a group of rogue NSA agents who kill a US Congressman and try to cover up the murder. It stars Will Smith and Gene Hackman, with Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, and Regina King in supporting roles. The film was written by David Marconi and directed by Tony Scott. Robert Clayton Dean is a lawyer with a wife and family whose happily normal life is turned upside down after a chance meeting with a college buddy at a lingerie shop. Unbeknownst to the lawyer, he's just been burdened with a videotape of a congressman's assassination. Hot on the tail of this tape is a ruthless group of National Security Agents commanded by a belligerently ambitious fed named Reynolds. Using surveillance...
