1/10: Dreadful
Monday, June 17, 2013

If it weren't based on a true story, Compliance would leave the viewer utterly baffled and confused at how completely clueless and simple minded some people in authority can be. Critics would slam the movie for its lack of plausibility and incoherence. It is only the veracity of the plot that prevents us from having to suspend disbelief, because it truly happened. This is the famed recent story of a fast-food manager who, upon receiving a call from a policeman, is asked to detain and search an employee suspected of stealing money from a customer. The shame doesn't end with a simple inspection of pockets and purse; there is a strip search and more. All the while, the restaurant is packed with people and few staff. It's a stressful situation.Imagine you're Sandra (Ann Dowd), the manager. A cop's on the phone. You believe him when he says your young employee Becky (Dreama Walker...

7/10: I dare you NOT to react
Thursday, January 3, 2013

I dare you to watch Compliance and not have some deep-rooted psychological reaction. Yell at the screen. Curse the characters. Walk out in disgust. I guarantee ANY movie fan will react.Compliance isn't a movie one can casually watch and shrug-off as if one hasn't just seen something. I am not even sure how my closest friends would react to a film like this one. I watched with curious fascination at first but the fascination and interest quickly evolved into disdain and eventual outrage as the film played itself out for the audience's voyeuristic entertainment. Knowing that the film is based on a "True Story" is even more off-putting but none-the-less (and possibly more) repulsive. Thinking back, it is even unsettling trying to "peg" the audience as the unsuspecting pawns in this perverse social experiment gone horribly wrong. Before getting to the film specifically, much has been made in regards to this...

3/10: All that hype...what an awful excuse for a smart movie
Friday, September 20, 2013

Well as it turns out this is the second time I wrote this review. The first time I wrote it, I was ranting about how completely implausible this was and while it claims to be based on a true story I didn't believe 99% of it. I thought the film makers were trying to test how stupid people that watched this could be. Well...I had to delete my review and start again because guess what? It happened. Seemingly every detail of this disgusting film happened in real life. It is probably one of the most disgusting things on film I have ever seen and to think this happened in real life is revolting. But the question is did it make a good film? My answer is still no. I mean it was decently filmed but there is less than zero entertainment value because there is nothing entertaining about watching someone raped and disgraced and humiliated. I heard nothing...

3/10: Out of Compliance
Sunday, September 16, 2012

I might be out of compliance myself as this review might contain some minor spoilers. You've been warned.)Compliance was truly one of the hardest films for me to watch. And no, it was not because of the following:1. Extreme Gore. 2. Gratuitous Violence and Language. 3. Child Abuse. 4. A Guest Appearance by Snooki. It was because of stupidity. Unbelievable and downright contemptuous ignorance. Sure, we (or at least my reader and I) live in a country that mostly stands behind the likes of The Jersey Shore, The Kardashians and most recently, some trailer trash honey bunch kid that I've only heard word of mouth about. But the "inspired by a true story" morons shown here in Compliance actually make me believe there are real-life people getting duped over the phone by scam artists. I honestly thought: if they did exist, it would have to be .00009% of the population. I was sooo wrong.What...

10/10: Compliance (2012) - An Indie Masterpiece
Thursday, September 20, 2012

In a year filled with comic book movies, R-rated comedies, and plenty of disappointments and "stinkers", now is the time to actually take a break from that, and take the time to dig deeper into the real world where we take a look at a small-budget independent gem that has met complete controversy at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where some audience members actually walked out during the screening, and there were shouting matches that occurred during the Q&A session. "Compliance" is that type of movie, for sure. Besides, there's no surprise, because "Compliance" is one of the most affective and thought-provoking movies I've ever seen, and it's also one of the best films of the year! Based on actual events, "Compliance" is set at a fast-food restaurant at a normal work day, where the manager gets a call from a man who presents himself as a police officer, who called...
