6/10: Blood Diamond
Monday, August 6, 2007

From director Edward Zwick (Legends of the Fall, The Last Samurai) this is quite a gripping action thriller with controversial imagery and realistic situations. Based in 1999, Sierra Leone, the film sees fisherman Solomon Vandy (Amistad's Oscar nominated Djimon Hounsou) dreams that his son, Dia Vandy (Kagiso Kuypers) will grow to be a doctor, but this is shattered when rebels invade his village, and kidnap him and his family. He is forced to work in the diamond mines, and it is there that he comes across a huge pink diamond, and he managed to hide it just before being arrested by the government army. It is in the jail that diamond smuggler Danny Archer (Oscar and Golden Globe nominated Leonardo DiCaprio, with a slightly confusing accent) from Zimbabwe overhears his find, and releases Soloman proposing to help him find his family in return for finding the diamond. Using American journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) they manage to find Soloman...

9/10: Oscar-worthy Performances Saves The Movie
Wednesday, January 11, 2012

A South African mercenary and a Mende fisherman find their fates forever intertwined as they embark on a quest to obtain a rare and highly coveted pink diamond in director Edward Zwick's frantic adventure drama entitled Blood Diamond. It is a political thriller film co-produced and directed by Zwick that features Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou. The title refers to blood diamonds, which are diamonds mined in African war zones and sold to finance conflicts, and thereby profit warlords and diamond companies across the world.Set during the Sierra Leone Civil War in 1992-2002, the film shows a country torn apart by the struggle between government soldiers and rebel forces. It also portrays many of the atrocities of that war, including the rebels' amputation of people's hands to discourage them from voting in upcoming elections.Ripped from his family farm and forced to toil away in the sweltering South African diamond fields, Solomon Vandy...

9/10: I am Born Trouble
Saturday, December 3, 2011

I almost never catch these big time films when they make their initial debut, but keep their critical acclaim in the back of my mind when I'm trying to decide on what to watch next. "Blood Diamond" grabbed a lot of attention when it came out for it's stars DiCaprio and Hounsou, and I have to say, their team up was one of the more eclectic casting decisions I've come across. It reminded me a little of Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier in "The Defiant Ones", and if you think about it, that kind of described the main characters here as they pursue a large rare diamond amid rebel strife in the African country of Sierra Leone. My biggest takeaway from the film was just how brutal and uncivilized life can be in parts of the world we're unfamiliar with while we sit in our comfy living rooms watching stories like this unfold. As far as...

7/10: Djimon Hounsou brings humanity
Monday, September 16, 2013

Diamond smuggler Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) and journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) are working in the chaos of Sierra Leone. Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) is a poor fisherman. His village is attacked, and his family is scattered. His son is pressed into fighting for the rebels. He is put into forced labor mining for diamonds. When he finds a rare pink diamond, he figures it's his way out. There is more than white people coming to fix black people problems. Most of it is due to Djimon Hounsou's powerful performance. Leonardo DiCaprio does a weird African accent, but I'm willing to overlook it. This movie has a grand scale. The refugee camp is big. The battles are surprisingly big. The subject matter is big. So it's very interesting that the best part of the movie is Solomon Vandy. The only drawback is that the story is too big. It's unbelievably big. Since this isn't...

7/10: Diamonds are worth life itself
Sunday, May 20, 2007

A "blood diamond" is also known as a conflict diamond...a gem that helps finance rebellions. Civil War is an explosive reality smothering 1999 Sierra Leone. Two men find themselves joining together to recover a rare pink diamond...the immense value is worth something different to each man. Fisherman Solomon Vandy(Djimon Hounsou)hid the gem while being forced at gunpoint to mine for the precious stones. If he can recover it; he will be able to rescue his wife from war torn displacement. The other man, Danny Archer(Leonardo DiCaprio)is a mercenary turned smuggler that wants the blood diamond for his own personal gain. Maddy Bowen(Jennifer Connelly)is a syndicated journalist that wants to aid these two men's quest for the sake of the story itself. A story that can blow the whistle on the unsavory business of forcing the unfortunate to work in the diamond fields in order to make diamond dealers even richer
