4/10: Great tense first 20 minutes...

Great tense first 20 minutes. Dismal cartoon beyond that. Here's why. Spoilers.I liked:The production values The cinematography That the opening seems timeless. Is it the 1950s, 60s, 80s, 2020s? We don't know. When the boy loses the ball I felt a deep sense of dread.I disliked:The boy was smashed on the head. No scars. No bumps. Nada. Why would she take the Black kid if she had no plans for him. Why the risk? What she was just waiting in a wide open field...by herself...on a bright sunny day.....not 11pm at night.....and she beat up and kidnapped two athletic boys? Really....?Overall up until the boy kills the man with the knife it just got progressively worse and worse. The boy doesn't run away for help to return, doesn't go to the neighbours.....but goes back into the house. The boy kills a man and with blood all...

Tuesday, August 3, 2021

This movie is terrible and it has nothing to do with the politics. This is just a horrible film, plain and simple. I see some people saying that it would have been good if it weren't for the Donald Dump bumper sticker. Wrong! This film defies all logic. The writing is terrible. The acting is bad. When someone calls 911 from a landline, they don't have to trace the area of the call. They immediately know the address that the call is being made from. If it were a cellphone then they wouldn't know the exact location but from a landline they would. The police would never go to a suspects house alone and then walk into the house calling the suspects name and stumble blindly into an ambush. He would have called for backup as soon as he realized something was wrong. Also, cops don't just randomly got to houses without reporting the location of...

2/10: Milling about like a roomba...
Wednesday, August 4, 2021

Milling about like a roomba is what passes as 'tense' in this film After a boy and his best friend are kidnapped, our protagonist manages to escape, but is then faced with the dilemma of getting real help for his friend, or going back in the house to spend an hour and half moving from room to room with the urgency of a potted plant. But his biggest challenge isn't fighting the kidnapper, or even how to unlock the door to his friend's prison, but his own lack of problem solving skills. No human acts like our protagonist who doesn't seem to know what he's doing from one moment to the next. He flip-flops between trying to free his friend or getting help from a human who has a grasp of object permanence - but fails to follow through with any until he's fought and hidden from two bad guys on multiple occasions. This film...

Child actors good. Story line horrendous. Oblivion takes all. Saving you 2 hours you won't get back. The story line is set early and in the synopsis - 2 boys are kidnapped by unknown men. It becomes a tense battle to stay alive, with the men being about as oblivious to what is going on as one can expect in a low grade horror film. What starts out with true suspensful promise unfortunately goes downhill about a quarter way in. The film uses a tactic to keep the suspense going that doesn't work for prolonged periods but the director iinsists on using it. At that point, at the halfway mark, the film takes a marked turn for the worse when the stuidity heightens.4 stars for the kids. Zero for the script. No rating for the camerawork which is almost always in the dark because... it's more suspensful that way. This was a total waste of time. As...

2/10: Speaking of dumb decisions.. I...
Saturday, July 31, 2021

Speaking of dumb decisions.. I was about to stop watching several times, because the boy's actions were so illogical or just plain stupid. Yes, he's supposed to be quite young, but even at this age and under stress you just wouldn't have done some of these things, e.g. Checking out a safe and flipping to photos of victims while your kidnapper is taking a shower a few metres away.Apart from that, there were the usual hackneyed thriller elements such as "fleeing without taking the gun" and "leaving the perpetrator lying unconsciously without trying to immobilise him/her in any way".Besides that, how has an old dial phone a modern RJ11 plug, and how could the kid completely clean up such a massive amount of blood in such short time with just two tea towels?
